International tourist arrival increase 9.6 percent in May

International tourist arrival in May 2018 has witnessed a growth of 9.6 percent as compared to the arrivals in May 2017. According to the statistics of Department of Immigration, a total of 68,825 international tourists visited Nepal in May 2018. With this, the arrival figures in the period of January to May has reached 454,855, which is an increase of 12.5 percent over the same period in 2017.

The arrivals from India witnessed a growth of 8.6 percent in May in comparison to the figures of May 2017. Similarly, the overall arrivals from the SAARC countries registered a positive growth of 2.2 percent over the same month last year. However, the visitors from Bangladesh decreased by 49.3 percent.

Visitor arrivals from China continue to soar as in the previous months and have increased by 25.2 percent. Arrivals from Asia (other than SAARC) have also recorded positive growth of 14.2 percent.  Likewise, the visitors from Thailand and Singapore to Nepal increased by 62.1 percent and 11.3 percent respectively.

European segment has witnessed an overall decline of 18 percent in May 2018 as compared to the same months last year. However, arrivals from France and Germany increased by 26.8 percent and 49 percent respectively. The arrivals from the UK also declined by 7.4 percent.

Tourist arrivals from Australia and New Zealand have also increased by 10.4 percent and 28.7 percent respectively. Likewise, visitors from USA and Canada have also grown by 7.4 percent and 5.3 percent respectively in May 2018.
